Menningarmess is a multidisciplinary cultural festival held at Portið, Listasafn Reykjavíkur.
The collaboration event between .haus x Listasafn Reykjavíkur x City of Reykjavík featured live music, performances, exhibitions, a creative market, games, and hands-on activities for children, creating an accessible and engaging experience for more than 10 000 visitors of all ages.
messy, in a good way
The name Menningarmess plays on the dual meaning of the word mess. On one hand, it refers to a fair or marketplace — a place where people gather, exchange ideas, and discover new things. On the other, it evokes mess — something delightfully chaotic, unexpected, and full of surprises.
This tension between structure and spontaneity became the foundation of the identity. Menningarmessa celebrates the kind of organized chaos that emerges when artists, musicians, makers, families, and curious visitors come together in one place. It invites exploration, wandering, and accidental discoveries rather than following a predetermined path.
a day full of music, arts, and activities
The programme included live performances, exhibitions, a creative market, workshops, competitions, and activities for kids. Visitors could join a cycling challenge, browse work from local artists and makers, or simply wander around and see what they stumbled upon.
