Soundscaping Friction Fit at Citispace NYC, featuring the work of Matthew Woodward, is built around ideas of pressure, balance, and fitting things into new places. The title comes from the way the exhibition is installed: beams are pressed into place to hold each artwork, without needing to be hidden or heavily built around.
creating sonic dimension to the urban oasis
Woodward’s work is made from found paper collected over years of walking through New York. These are small fragments from the city—bits of paper, sketches, and drawings. Many of the drawings come from architectural details that were originally designed to show how buildings hold pressure and structure.
The soundscape follows this idea in a simple and quiet way. It creates a calm background that supports the space without taking over. It helps the viewer slow down and notice the details, like the artworks themselves.
Together, the sound and the exhibition show how old things can be placed into new contexts and given new meaning. Nothing is fully lost—things are just rearranged, held in place by careful balance and attention.
